What Is Odoo?
Odoo, formerly called "OpenERP", is one of the top open source ERP applications available and a perfect Enterprise Resource Planning software solution for small to mid-sized manufacturers, distributors, retail, and services businesses.
It is a 100% modular application and when Odoo is first installed there are ZERO modules installed with it so you are able to only install the modules you need. By just installing some of the "Employees" modules, one can quickly build a very nice Human Resources Management (HRM) system. Install a few of the Sales modules and now you have a CRM. In fact, one of the reasons for the name change from OpenERP to Odoo is that Odoo is much more than an ERP!
Odoo is available in three formats including a Community version which is available as free open source, a Professional version which has the exact same features and functions and also includes a professional support agreement, and a cloud hosted version available as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering. The cloud version allows a beginner to get up and running on Odoo fairly quickly and at relatively low up-front cost and allows supported modules to be added, but like most other SaaS offerings, doesn't provide the ability to modify any of the code so customization is limited.

In addition, Odoo makes it extremely easy to customize and modify the base functionality with little-to-no programming required!
First, Odoo also has an "Application Builder" that, in most cases, will either greatly reduce the amount of time needed by a programmer, or eliminate the need for programming entirely. In short, the Application Builder includes the following:
- Screen Designer - Develop new screens, add fields
- Report Designer - Design report templates using Open Office
- Workflow Designer - Drag & drop customization of business logic and automate actions for each document or step
- Database Builder - Create new objects and add new fields
- Web Services - Allows development of custom plug-ins using a full-featured web-service interface through XML-RPC
- Module Packager - Allows customizations to be packaged into a module for publishing or re-use
Next, Odoo also has their "LaunchPad" which currently consists of more than 1,800 different modules that have been contributed by various partners and, if there's function you need that's not already part of Odoo, the chances are that some other business has needed that function and a module already exists in LaunchPad that can either be used as-is, or modified to fit a unique requirement.
Odoo also has a complete set of web services making it very easy to integrate with other applications.
