What Is Magento?

Magento is an open-source content management system specifically designed for ecommerce websites that was originally developed by Varien Inc. under the name "Bento" and later acquired by eBay.

Magento is, by far, the top open source ecommerce application currently in use and is estimated to account for approximately 1% of all websites on the Internet and approximately 34% of the top 20 ecommerce platforms.

With a complete and robust set of features that include support for digital products and a theme based structure, Magento provides function comparable to that of the best of commercial ecommerce solutions, but Magento is 100% free to download.

Magento utilizes a theme based structure that separates layouts, templates, and skins to comprise the "look and feel" of the ecommerce website. The structure is very similar to WordPress and, once a developer is familiar with how Magento's theme structure works, the act of creating a unique store design is relatively simple.

Here are just some of the many enterprise-class ecommerce features found in Magento:

  • Manage multiple websites and stores from a single Magento instance and administration panel
  • Flexible coupon rules give you the ability to create numerous marketing campaigns and loyalty coupons
  • Option to up-sell and cross-sell during the checkout process
  • Support for digital/downloadable products
  • Integration with USPS, FedEx, and UPS enable customers to receive real time shipping rate quotes
  • One-page checkout makes it quick and easy for customers to checkout without having to register first
  • RSS feeds for both customers and administrators (i.e. new order feed and price alert feed)
  • Google Analytics support and Website Optimizer integration for A/B split multi-variate testing
  • Integration with more than 50 payment gateways (including the CyoGate Gateway!)
  • Customer reviews with moderation by administrators
  • Extensive analytics and reporting options
  • Out-of-the-box mobile-ready theme
  • Self-generating site maps
  • Newsletter management
  • Layered navigation for filtering by product attributes
  • URL rewrites for seach engine friendly and easy to remember URL's
  • Web services API to make it easy to integrate third-party tools and applications

Magento provides three different software versions including Magento Community Edition, Magento Enterprise Edition, and Magento Go.

Magento Community Edition is a free open source content-management system. Anyone with programming experience can modify the core application. Developers can implement the core files and extend its functionality by creating new plug-in modules themselves, or by adding one of the hundreds of add-on modules provided by other developers in Magento Connect.

Magento Enterprise Edition is derived from the Magento Community Edition and has the same core files. Unlike Community Edition, this is commercial open source and not free open source software, but has more features and functionality. This edition is designed for large businesses that require technical support with installation, usage, configuration, and troubleshooting.

Magento Go is a cloud-based eCommerce solution that includes web hosting by Magento Inc. While Magento Go has many built-in modules and can support additional Magento extensions for more functionality, it is the least customizable of the Magento platforms.

A key component in the implementation of any Ecommerce system is the training of personnel and ongoing support.
